The first is called woman work Essay Example For Students

The first is called woman work Essay We will write a custom essay on The first is called woman work specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now This idea also links to her time with her grandmother in Arkansas when the customers were all nearly all cotton pickers, even the women like the one in her poem who had all the other things to do on a daily basis. In R. S Thomass poem Lore he has a few very short sentences one is even only one word. The impact a one worded sentence has on the reader is the extra impact this has the reader has more time to ponder on the word which may provoke a thought in this example it was a rhetorical question: Miserable I think that R. S Thomas wanted it to be rhetorical and it would have been to a small percentage of readers but not to most beforehand he is saying how he is eighty-five and still farming and staying outdoors most of his life, for most and me especially that doesnt sound fun, im sure most would rather be inside watching Eastenders with a cup of tea in one hand and the local newspaper in the other well at his age at least, but he certainly doesnt seem to be one to conform to anyone elses beliefs. There is one word that does shock me: treachery of the seasons it seems like someone has betrayed you, well thats the context most people would use it in, but it works and makes the readers mind jump up and wonder what will this poem be like, what sort of character is the writer, because form this line he seems bitter and resentful but you find out. This could be because of his religious experience and upbringing that there is no grey everything in the world is either black or white. He doesnt appear to look at things form other peoples points of view. He asks a lot of rhetorical questions in his poem: Miserable? Whats living but courage? and What to do? I think he is trying to change peoples views and show them what the correct answer to the question is. Unlike Maya Angelou, who simply presents her ideas unbiasdly as they are for you, she lets you make up your own mind and because of this she seems more helpless and honest, this is why more people would probably prefer her poem because she is not forcing her beliefs on anyone else like R. S Thomas. R. S Thomas uses metaphors in many of his poems he chose to only use one in this one, probably didnt want to seem soft or gentle because this is the image I get of a person when there is a lot of metaphors in their poems. Bearded with golden dew Thomas is describing the grass he also uses personification in the same phrase to describe the grass looking like there is a beard on it. The vocabulary between the two poems is very contrasting. In the poem Lore R. S Thomas physicalises a lot of things eighty-five winters old. Instead of saying he is 85 he says how many winters he has witnessed in his lifetime, he seems to have a different approach to many things even work. Instead of using machines to do work more easily he wants to spend more time doing work by hand which would appear odd to many never mind the machine. He uses harsh language; treachery, kick my arse! He chooses to use strong, powerful language; this could be because of his scheduled upbringing and life in a very organised strict church environment. He doesnt walk around a topic he bluntly states his views and opinions, as not to dawdle. In the church you mainly encounter a yes or no opinion about topics, clergy are straight to the point and quick to state it like in R. S Thomass poem. In one word treachery you understand his opinion about the seasons. Maya Angelou keeps language simple and straightforward the floor to mop and let me rest tonight. There arent any hidden meanings in her poem it is simple and easy to read unlike Lore. .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 , .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 .postImageUrl , .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 , .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4:hover , .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4:visited , .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4:active { border:0!important; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4:active , .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4 .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud2f5b32aa1f6a4f16a3d059493b753e4:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Walt Whitman the poet of American inclusion EssayThis could be because she is showing how this woman didnt have much of an education and doesnt know how to use fancy types of language. She does however use alliteration: star shine I think is to slow the pace of the poem down and to keep the poem together and make the tone more gentle near the end. When reading Woman Work the first stanza has no punctuation until the last line, so it is breathtaking literally. This may have been done to show how like a slave she is always busy and never stops. This could have also been done also to emphasise the fact that there was a severe lack of education in Maya Angelous life. The message that the poet is trying to get through to the reader in Woman Work is how horrible life can be and the things you have to do to live. Also when I was reading this poem I was trying to think what the woman in this poem would have done when she was educated. Two things came into my mind. When there is no punctuation in the first stanza, this makes me the reader breathless when reading through. It obviously changes the way I read the poem and after I read the list stanza at the beginning I fell relieved its over, but then it makes the reader realise that the woman in the poem still hasnt had a rest and I want her to feel relieved like I did. I think that Maya did this to reflect the fact that she didnt have an education. R. S Thomas however has a lot of punctuation in his poem. He asks many questions, has a few very short sentences and uses an assortment of commas and full stops: What to do? , large, man, and and miserable. It affects the way I read very much, because all the punctuation make me have to pause a lot when reading the poem through, but this could be useful because it gave me longer to consider the points made in the poem. I think the poet has done this to show how organised his life is and how he doesnt miss anything out, I also think it might be used to change the readers views about the issues discussed and the characters personality throughout. The rhetorical questions and exclamations show the irony and sarcasm of R. S Thomass character. I believe the excessive amount of punctuation in this poem is emphasising the poets very organised and scheduled life, living in a church and having strict rules to follow. The overall image I received form the poem Lore was that of an old bitter and proud man by himself working his field to its fullest. I think of him doing the same routine year after year, quite a repetitive lifestyle a bit unfulfilling for most. He seems very strong minded and willed, all he wants is a simple breakfast nothing luxurious just some plain tea and porridge, no extras, he doesnt even want milk or honey for his porridge just the basics for him. I can imagine he has a small wooden shack with no other family, he lives in solitary. In R. S Thomass poem he uses personification: Bearded with golden dew From this use of personification I visualise a golden shadow over a field of never ending grass. The grass is shimmering and seems very inviting to touch almost magical. Within this same line he uses a metaphor. The words golden dew could also describe how much he likes his lifestyle and how everything suits him perfectly. Again this reinforces my earlier thoughts about the beard on the grass. I believe that the poet put these to figurative language devices in the same line in order to maybe shock the reader because I usually associate these devices as the poet writing quiet gently and being a bit of a softy. But job Davies seems to be a completely opposite character to that so it throws the reader off a bit and keeps you wondering. R. S Thomas could have done this because it shows that there is only a very minimal room for such nonsense in the world of work and thats why he hasnt used these literary devices throughout his poem. .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 , .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 .postImageUrl , .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 , .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03:hover , .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03:visited , .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03:active { border:0!important; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03:active , .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03 .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u531229f6034f3d44974b8fcbcb338c03:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Role Century Poetry In Resisting 'Nationalism' EssayThis might be due to his very organized upbringing in a church environment where organisation and scheduled life is everything. In the poem Lore the rhyming scheme is a s follows; a,a,b,c this rhyming scheme doesnt change whatsoever throughout, I think the poet did this to show his background and the character in poem (Job Davies) views about how an scheduled hard working life is the only way to advance in life. In the poem woman work the rhyming scheme varies a lot throughout. In the first stanza the rhyming scheme is rhyming couplets throughout. Then in all the following four line stanzas the rhyming scheme is that the last words from the second line and fourth line rhyme. In the poem woman work the rhyming couplets in the first stanza help the flow and pace of the poem at the beginning it adds to the list effect of the first stanza, it also makes the woman seem quite bitter about what she has to do in a sarcastic sort of tone I can imagine her reading this out. The other four stanzas hold the poem together and slow the pace down more. The way in which I read the first stanza in a list form is reminiscent of her never ending seeming list of daily responsibilities. In the poem Lore the last three stanzas are all just pairs of rhyming couplets. This makes the poem quite a country sounding one sort of just bopping along, line, rhyme, line, and rhyme, like a tractor almost. This tractor sound I read to is extremely reminiscent and tied into the theme of job Davies working his field. The strict rhyme scheme that R. S Thomas uses echoes his strict schedules-hum-drum working life suggests no room for dreams. Both poets have used rhythm and rhyme to constantly add to the theme of work and specifically either

How Baking Soda Works - Cooking Chemistry

How Baking Soda Works - Cooking Chemistry Baking soda (not to be confused with baking powder) is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) that is added to baked goods to make them rise. Recipes that use baking soda as a leavening agent also contain an acidic ingredient, such as lemon juice, milk, honey or brown sugar. When you mix together the baking soda, acidic ingredient, and liquid youll get bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. Specifically, the baking soda (a base) reacts with the acid to give you carbon dioxide gas, water, and salt. This works the same as the classic baking soda and vinegar volcano but instead of getting an eruption, the carbon dioxide fizzes to puff up your baked goods. The reaction occurs as soon as the batter or dough is mixed, so if you wait to bake a product containing baking soda the carbon dioxide will dissipate and your recipe will fall flat. The gas bubbles expand in the heat of the oven and rise to the top of the recipe, giving you a fluffy quickbread or light cookies. Waiting too long after mixing to bake your recipe can ruin it, but so can using old baking soda. Baking soda has a shelf life of about 18 months. You can test baking soda before adding it to a recipe to make sure its still good.

Patience The modern author’s lost virtue

Patience The modern author’s lost virtue Patience: The modern author’s lost virtue In our last article, we enumerated the different qualities successful indie authors usually have: they’re great writers, entrepreneurial-minded, good at marketing, etc. But here’s one quality only a select few possess: patience. The rise of self-publishing has brought with it the decline of this all-important virtue. There always seems to be a rush- to write, to get the next book out, to sell it. We’re in the pre-ordering, pre-promoting, pre-emptive stage of publishing. And if you’re like us, racing against the clock is starting to feel preposterous.Even established writers are ruled by the clock. Let’s consider Hugh Howey’s website: the first thing you see is this little widget indicating his progress on his upcoming books. I almost want to bet on which bar is going to be filled first, and that’s just one author! Why is this â€Å"race† so characteristic of self-publishing? Well, first, because indie authors are in charge of all the work- including how quickly pages go to print (concretely or digitally). The pace of a book’s release used to be determined by a publishing house; indies don’t face that controlling force. The second big reason is financial. Self-publishing authors don’t get advances. They are only able to earn money when the book is out and selling. A sense of urgency is a foregone conclusion, until you realize that your first book won’t sell as well as you hoped (gaining market traction is no quick or easy task). So you feel an even greater sense of urgency to churn out book #2†¦and 3†¦and so on and so forth. This can be perfectly fine and even prove advantageous, but can easily ruin all your hard work: with urgency comes precipitation. What’s precipitation? Well, it can be Joanna Penn ordering several thousand print copies of he r first non-fiction book before knowing how to market it, for example. Or in most less-extreme cases, releasing a first book that hasn’t been copy edited or proofread- or one full of formatting issues. When you enter the self-publishing race and start producing content at a fast pace, you can miss out on great opportunities- and I’m not even talking about the opportunity to simply spend more time on each book (before releasing it) to make it better.I’m talking about marketing opportunities. I’m talking about something that might sound like a sacrilege to many indie authors: sitting on finished work. I first thought of this when reading the excellent blog post by Hugh Howey on â€Å"The Liliana Nirvana Technique†, which basically consists of â€Å"publishing 5 works at once† and the 6th one shortly after. If you go through the comments below the post, you can get a sense of how crazy this sounds to many indie authors. However, when you think ab out it, it makes sense: by â€Å"flooding† Amazon all at once with your work, you dramatically increase your exposure; your books get linked to each other, â€Å"every sale leading to recommendations for 4 or 5 more of your works†, and readers looking for content see your name everywhere.Sure, this means your readers have to wait longer for your next book, but if they’re already your readers, the only thing you’re creating is anticipation and suspense (just as you should have done in your narrative)! Case in point: How many of us are chomping at the bit just to pre-order The Winds of Winter? The good thing is that all this â€Å"theoretical thinking† has actually been validated by several of â€Å"Liliana’s peers†, as Hugh puts it. It takes guts to sit on a book (let alone 4 or 5), but patience is a virtue even in a digital age.

Marconi Jicks-Managing change in a company in severe crisis Essay

Marconi Jicks-Managing change in a company in severe crisis - Essay Example First, Managing Individual Emotions and Reactions to Change is the most complex and difficult due to the fact that nobody can please everybody and most especially nobody can satisfy the desire and need of everybody. Each person has needs that define their motivation which ultimately dictate their emotions and reactions. The Marconi stakeholders are no different. The mismanagement of the individual’s emotion and the resulting reaction to change is likened to a virus that can infect everybody making the company collectively resistant to any needed change. Second, Implementing the Change Agenda, Incorporating Hard and Soft Elements, after being threatened July 2001 to be put out of the job, each of Marconi’s remaining employees have their backs against the wall already. False application of the diplomatic or persuasive approach also known as the soft approach may not hold true to everybody the same is true to the opposite or hard approach. And Fifth, Leadership of Change is the least complex and difficult of all the issues since Mike Parton already has the imprimatur to effect change from the leadership of Marconi and is recognized by all stakeholders. Men are nonetheless resilient to change. Adversities or crisis in a culture normally makes the entire society more cohesive in achieving a common goal. However, a crisis that threatens the very livelihood of the employees tends to make each individual to prioritize providing for their family first instead of dwelling in abstract concepts such as the impetus to change. The measure of the conference’s impact can be effectively determined by the amount of change that happened thence and the actual support it garnered amongst the different stakeholders. The conference was able to show the presence of Mike Parton and the commitment of the leadership of Marconi which settled the percolating restiveness in the company amongst the stakeholders. The conference most

Buyer behaviour and market research 2 - Essay Example ive of the management and stakeholders to ensure there is a clear channel of communication and distribution of resources among all departments to avoid blame shifting thus enhance quick supervision. Societies expect companies to adhere to forces of mindset in order to build confidence within customers’ fraternity thus make stock turn over efficient and effective. Therefore, business prosperity largely relies on buyer behavior and market research. Business environment is paramount for successful fat-tracking of customer satisfaction and feed-back. Creation of stable working conditions and tranquil mindsets enable personnel produce quality products. Good environment can be observed through engaging dialogue and mutual organization of activities for instance, calling customers who complain. Decisions should accommodate views and opinions of all employees and buyers irrespective of social, economic, and political affiliation. Good relations are aimed at reducing acrimony in work place that may cause inefficiency in production of goods and services. Customer satisfaction factors for instance, assessing competitor, market survey, product specification, expectation, and admitting to failure help firms understand customers with ease. Conversely, microeconomic variables for example, stakeholder decisions, decision making, change of production techniques, and pricing of goods and services adversely lead to increase or decrease of customer walk-ins. Segmentation is a strategy that is set to divide consumers into groups within a target market. Alternative products greatly influence the nature of marketing to undertake because it provides customers with a better option when company’s goods and services are not appealing. Similarly alternatives create a boundary of differentiation between each company’s goods and services. This helps in guiding potential and new customers to the

Families need fathers Essay Example for Free

Families need fathers Essay The debate, Families need fathers is one in which there are many issues that need to be considered when looking at the question. Family poverty, domestic violence, the effect on children and family stereotypes by society all need to be considered in the debate. Recent surveys have shown that fathers also need families and therefore making the matter more complicated. Fathers still remain important in our society because family poverty is still largely prevented by the existence of a male, full time workers wage in a household. Due to the patriarchal nature of our society, women find it difficult to obtain appropriate work to fit in with custody of children. In a Social Trends survey the rise in mothers working part time form 49 percent in 1973 to 64 percent in 1994. This often means working in low paid, part time jobs with little chance that mothers earnings alone will be able to cover the cost of subsistence for themselves, never mind there children. Those who do work full time do not necessarily escape from economic dependence, choosing to work and pay for childcare may well prove uneconomic for large numbers of the working class. There is very little publicly provided care which fits the needs of working mothers: most pre school care is part time and infused with the ideology of education, rather then care and education. A large proportion of their income is spent on childcare and as childcare in Britain is the most expensive in Europe, lack of affordable childcare prevents the lone mother entering the labour market emphasising the need for fathers, or a male wage in the family. Married men work harder, earn more and are more likely to have a job then other men, according to Rowthorn and Ormerod, therefore preventing family poverty, although the modern woman is striking back. Nowadays it is easier to be a single mother. Welfare benefits, job opportunities, and the support of nurseries, playgroups and schools make it easier for single mothers to provide for their families alone. The Family Futures Report conducted by Graeme Leach predicts that by the year 2020 women will have become the main earners in at least half of all households. The feminisation of the work place will force companies to create a mother-track career as many companies will prefer the work of women to men meaning that affordable childcare will become available and the 20 percent pay gap will have disappeared. Even now, womens contributions through earnings are important in reducing the familys vulnerability to poverty. Families with 1 or 2 children were at the greatest risk of poverty without the earnings of the wife. In 1990, for example, people in households where the husband worked but the wife did not, had a 4 to 6 times higher risk of being in the bottom income quintile then those where both parents were working. Gittins (1993) states that more divorced men remarry showing that women have more independence and less need for a relationship, the family does not need a father or male figure to survive. The effect on children growing up without a father is one of the main focuses on the debate as there is a great deal of evidence to suggest that this has an enormous impact on the emotional and physical health of the child. Dennis and Erdos (1993) argued that research into the effect of fatherless families showed that unless a child is brought up in the constant atmosphere of human beings negotiating, co-operating, controlling their anger, affecting reconciliations, he (sic) cannot learn what it is to be an effective member of a social group for this he needs the presence of two adults in close interaction constantly in his immediate environment. Fatherless families are seen as contributing to the rise of educational failure, welfare dependency, and involvement in crime and drug abuse among young people, especially young boys from council estates. Indeed, only a quarter of persistent young offenders lived with two parents and that included step parents and mothers boyfriends, 4 out of 5 children going into care have lone parents and on American and British council estates it was found that the higher the percentage of lone parent households, the higher the percentage of crime and burglary. These statistics show that it is not just families that need fathers; society also needs them as well. The concern for the effect of divorce on children is being researched more and more as divorce rates are becoming higher, one in three marriages now end in divorce and the effect on children is being examined closely. Rowthorn and Ormerod state that on every measure of achievement and emotional condition, children living with their married parents usually do better then other children although it is often hard to distinguish between the effects of marriage and divorce and other factors such as poverty and racism. Nevertheless, divorce often means poor exam results, damaged health and stress and four times the risk of needing psychiatric help as a child. Dr Richards took 17,000 children from the National Child Development Survey and monitored their lives at intervals until they were 35. He discovered that children, whose parents had divorced before they were 16, were on average less emotionally stable, left home earlier, and divorced or separated more frequently. However, this study was concerned with children of the middle class in 1958, and from then till now, social attitudes have changed as divorce is much more acceptable then it was in the fifties and therefore children are less affected by it, but most studies show the more involved the father; the better developed the child intellectually and socially. This view that children are affected by the absence of a father in the family is one to be contested. The latest research for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation shows that the absence of one or other parent figure from a household is not the aspect of separation which most effects the childs development. Children are not necessarily harmed by divorce providing the parents split in an amicable fashion and good regular contact with the absent father can reduce some of the ill effects of divorce.

Prelude to Beowulf´s Last Fight :: English Epics Literature Anglo Saxon Essays

Prelude to Beowulf ´s Last Fight The Old English epic Beowulf depicts Anglo-Saxon warrior culture where fate (wyrd) governs the actions of the hero. Beowulf, now over seventy years old and king of the Geats, has earned his respect and glory on the battlefields as a great warrior. The honorable old king has ruled for fifty years, and according to the author, "he was a wise king, an old guardian of the land" (Norton, 55), when the dragon attacks Beowulf's Hall, assaulting Geats at night. The dragon - "the worm" - as he is referred to sometimes by the poet, while guarding the treasure in the depth of his cave, is awakened by a slave who steals the cup from his hoard. The dragon, being greedy, is infuriated: "the hoard-guard waited restless until evening came; then the barrow keeper was in rage: he would requite that precious drinking cup with vengeful fire."(Norton, 56) The treasure, that is now guarded by the worm, once (over three hundred years ago) belonged to a tribe of great warriors. Many have died over the years on the battlefields; only one, the Last Survivor, has escaped the terrible fate, and so he speaks: " War-death has taken each man of my people, evil, dreadful and deadly, each of those who has given up this life, the hall-joy of men. I have none who wears sword or cleans the plated cup, rich drinking vessel. The company of retainers has gone elsewhere†¦ There is no harp-delight, no mirth of the singing wood, no good hawk flies through the hall, no swift horse stamps in the castle court. Baleful death has sent away many races of men." (Norton, 56) Parallel to this speech is the ubi sunt passage from Old English poem "The Wanderer." The old warrior, the wanderer or, as the poet calls him, "the earth-walker," who has lost his comrades in the battles, talks about the loneliness of exile and the aimlessness of war: "Where has the horse gone?

Ap World Ccot on China

CCOT From 100 C. E to 1000 C. E there were many changes along with continuities in the political and cultural life of the Chinese peoples. For example a big change in the political life of China was a series of nomadic invasions. A large continuity in bureaucracy may have changed just a little bit but it was always present in China. Through its history a big continuity in Chinese culture could be Confucianism. Even though Confucianism does not disappear, Buddhism becomes very popular when the Han Dynasty collapses and nomadic tribes invade offering hope in light of chaos. There were many changes in political history of China. A large change was the nomadic invasions of China. It caused the Han Dynasty to collapse and endless wars. It also gave women more rights because Buddhism brought better living conditions for women and believed women were as equal parts, which let Buddhism spread. Bureaucracy was a large continuity in Chinese political life. Many emperors lived under a bureaucrac y, which in turn meant that people under the emperor’s rule dealt with bureaucracy. In 220 C. E, when the nomadic peoples were invading China, and endless wars led the collapse of the Han Dynasty, the concept of Confucianism does not agree with chaos the Chinese looked to Buddhism that â€Å"offers hope in the light of chaos† although Confucianism does not disappear the expansion of Buddhism in Chinese culture is a big change. Confucianism was very popular throughout Chinese history. It is still practiced today and will continue to be practiced.Confucianism has set rules and roles for everyone in Chinese society because Confucius saw people getting along by being content with the roles they played in society. Its rules and roles did not go very well in chaos, which is why Buddhism became very popular in 220 C. E. Even though Confucianism lost power it still remained in many Chinese households. Continuities and changes are inevitable in Chinese history whether it be cult urally or politically. Buddhism and nomadic invasions were large changes, but Confucianism will always be in the Chinese culture and bureaucracy will also be a big continuity.

Politics in Texas Essay

The Texan republicans stand for the ideas of individualism. That entrepreneurship is the key to unlocking the powers of the economy, according to the Republican Party. The Democratic Party respects the notion of small business and entrepreneurship as it also strives to encourage jobs for hard-working laborers. In conjunction with this, the Democrats want businesses to be more flexible and technologically friendly, along with finding creative, environmentally-sound ways of promoting business. The Green Party also claims to support the power of the small business, but they have a more environmental approach that specifies several details in which companies should abide. In accordance with this, the Green Party wishes to limit free-trade in exchange with environmentally and labor friendly trade. They also specify a set wage that would allow an individual to afford a one-bedroom apartment on thirty-percent of their income. In opposition to a heavily regulated economy, the libertarians seem like the Republican Party, but to a more extreme. They are against most taxation, including income taxes since they define a wage or salary as a trade of money and service, not an equity. I believe this to be a proper point. How can people promote the economy when a chunk of their wages is taken by the government? The Libertarians are also opposed to the use of eminent domain which I agree with. It should not be up to the government to choose how someone’s property may or may not be used.

buy custom The Great Trade-Off Illusion essay

buy custom The Great Trade-Off Illusion essay It is crucial to note that people create organizations and firms in order to leverage their collective resources with an aim of pursuing common goals. Hart (2011) argues that as organizations and firms pursue these given goals, they interact with others within the larger context known as the society. Based on their goals, firms can be classified as either non-profit, for profit, or governmental. As a result of scarce resources, it has become extremely crucial for organizations to adopt sustainable ways of carrying out their activities or otherwise, they may fail to operate in the foreseeable future. For instance, many firms that rely on fossil fuels have experienced a drastic reduction in their profits in the last five years. This is due to the sharp increase of this commodity in the international markets, where oil prices per barrel have surged by almost 300% to at least $147 in 2011 in comparison to 2008 (Hart, 2011). As a result of this, it has become crucial for firms to adopt modern ways of carrying out business to enhance profitability, both in the short and long-run. However, as indicated by Friedman (1970), sustainable ways of carrying out business remains highly controversial. Some people who deeply thought why business exists or the general purpose of itdo not agree with societal obligations of companies, especially towards sustainable development. The paper will critically examine the issue of the great trade-off illusion in relation to the perspectives of Milton Friedman and Charles Handy. As indicated above, the importance of enhancing social activities in the place where they operate cannot be underrated. However, in the past, the issue of participation in societal activities by firms has faced stiff criticism from such scholars as Milton Friedman and Charles Handy. Friedman, a Nobel prize-winning economist, argued that the issue of corporate social responsibility distracts leaders from attaining the set economic goals. He believed that the social responsibility of any business is to increase profits. Further, he argued that any society benefits enormously when businesses focus more on maximizing their financial success (Friedman, 1970). On the other hand, Handy is critical of overemphasizing the share prices as the key metric for the success of any corporate organization. He candidly proposes that the main aim of a business is not to make profit only but to use the profit obtained in enhancing the livelihood of families of those who are engaged in business activities (Handy, 2002). It is crucial tto note that this narrow view by some leaders has led to unsustainable operation of firms in the societies where they operate. Hart (2011) argues that organizations should pay for all the negative consequences linked to their operations. Paradoxically, this type of end-of-pipe approach by various leaders and firms has resulted in what is called great trade-off illusion (Hart, 2011). It is a general belief that in order to meet the set societal obligations, businesses must enormously sacrifice their financial performances. Consequently, this misapprehension has made many businesses across the world view aspects like an envir onmental impact as one of the negative responsibilities as opposed to exploring all the creative possibilities that it are entailed (Hart,2011). Generally, in order to realize all the available sustainable opportunities, firms should develop new mindsets, which would enable them to develop full contextual solutions to the real problems faced. This should be done in a way that natural diversity and local culture are upheld (Hart, 2011). It is based on the factor that traditional assumptions concerning businesses should be discouraged, thus forging relationships that are built on respect, understanding, and trust to all the stakeholders involved. Understanding Keywords for Website Content - Proofeds Writing Tips

Understanding Keywords for Website Content - Proofeds Writing Tips Understanding Keywords for Website Content Every business needs a website nowadays, so knowing how to write good content using SEO keywords is vital. But what exactly are keywords? And what does this mean in practice when writing for your website? In this post, we look at the basics of using keywords in online content. What Is a Keyword? At its most basic, a keyword is a term that someone enters into a search engine to find a website. For all of the content on your website, then, you should think about which keywords will make it easy to find. In other words, your website content should be built around keywords. If you haven’t done so already, you should develop a list of keywords to use on your site. A good starting points for this is Google Analytics, which lets you see how people are currently finding your site. Looking at which keywords your competitors use on their websites is a good idea, too. Google has all the data.(Image: Google Design team) Before you start writing, though, you also need to know the difference between short tail and long tail keywords. Short Tail Keywords Short tail keywords (otherwise known as â€Å"head terms†) are single words or short phrases related to your core business activities. For instance, short tail keywords for our website would include terms like â€Å"proofreading† and â€Å"copy editing.† These are important because a lot of people search for them, but there is also a lot of competition for most short tail keywords. Long Tail Keywords Long tail keywords are longer, specific phrases closely related to some aspect of your business. In our case, for instance, we might identify phrases such as â€Å"American English proofreading for college papers† or â€Å"professional formatting for business documents.† People search for these terms less often, but it is easier to rank higher in search results for long tail keywords. 5 Tips for Using Keywords in Online Content Finally, we will offer five handy tips for how to work keywords into your writing. Give them a try next time you are working on some website copy! Quality beats quantity – In the past, you could trick search engines by packing a web page with keywords (this was known as â€Å"keyword stuffing†). However, modern search algorithms penalize websites that do this, so it should be avoided! Instead, focus on writing good quality content with your keywords scattered occasionally throughout. Use keywords strategically – Different types of keyword should be used on different parts of your website. Use short tail keywords on the most important pages (e.g., the home page or where you describe services). But you should also use a range of long tail keywords elsewhere on the site (e.g., a blog or news section). This will give you a large database of specific words and phrases that customers can use to find you. Readability above all – Never force a keyword into a sentence where it doesn’t fit. After all, if someone clicks on your site and gives up after reading the first awkward paragraph, keywords count for nothing. Make sure all content on your website is well written and error free first. Clever formatting – You can boost SEO results by formatting keywords so that they stand out (e.g., with bold or italic fonts). Using keywords in subheadings is especially important. You may also want to use bullet points to make pages easier to skim read. Use the meta description – While using keywords in online content is important, you should also use them in the meta description for each page of your site. This is the short summary that users see as a preview in search engines, so it is vital to get this passage right!

Business Ethics and social responsibility Essay

Business Ethics and social responsibility - Essay Example Since these are costly ethical activities that seem irrelevant to the business goal of maximizing owner value, many businesses choose to bluff and engage in some amount of deception and mask these little sins by justifying them with ethical theories that say such acts are ethical under the circumstances. This report examines these theories and perspectives on business ethics to determine if businesses can be forgiven for unethical behavior and, if so, at what point should one draw the demarcation line. Business ethics has been the focus of passionate debates since the time of Plato and Socrates. The possible reason for the diverging views is that people always have different concepts and perceptions of what is good or bad, and what is right and wrong. Aronson (2001) believes the study of business ethics can help provide the standards for determining what behavior is good and bad or what is right and wrong. The literature on business ethics suggests ways to discuss the many different perspectives or theories by grouping them according to their similarities. The most frequently used perspectives fall under two groups of theory called deontology and teleology. Deontology is also described as formalism while teleology is utilitarianism, which means that the former is non-consequentialist while the latter is consequentialist (Christensen, 2005). In ethics, formalism is defined as a concept that views an act as right or wrong irrespective of the consequences, while utilitarianism holds that right conduct is determined by its usefulness in promoting the most good for the largest number of persons and thus keeps an eye on the consequences of the act. From these definitions, one can start forming an idea of which of deontology and teleology is the better ethical approach to business. 2.a. Teleology & Deontology Teleology and deontology essentially uphold the same behavior that businesses should observe, which is business ethics. They differ only in their perspectives, means and desired results. Teleological theories focus on the "what" whereas the deontological view looks at the "how" of ethical behavior (Christensen, 2005). This means that in teleology, the outcome is more important than the intent, which is the reverse in deontology. Accordingly, teleology and deontology are traditionally seen as opposing viewpoints, with the former looking into the future to determine the best outcomes for everyone while the latter looking back in history to establish ethical guideposts from traditional culture and religion (Brady, 1985). Teleology is defined as the theory in which the only right-making properties are those that promote the good (Gaus, 2001). As for deontology, it is the perspective of doing what is morally right, regardless of the amount of good or evil that results from the act (Christ ensen,2005). Thus, teleology promotes what is good, while deontology promotes what is right (Gaus, 2001). For teleology, the more important thing is the outcome and less the behavior. It is the other way around for deontology. 2.b. Deontology at Work Deontology is derived from the Greek words deon (duty) and logos
